*On Wednesday, April 7, 1937, Captain E.C. Whitwell proposed an outdoor professional
wrestling tournament to the New York State Athletic Commission.  The tournament would
be held during the summer to determine a “real” World Heavyweight Champion.  Whitwell,
promoter of the New York Coliseum and in association with Jack Pfefer, offered to post
$20,000 in prizes and said that the tournament would break the reported wrestling trust.
The commission “indicated that it would approve the move.”
