Mark Calloway has wrestled under several names from the Master of Pain to the multiple-time World Champion, Undertaker. It doesn’t matter which name he uses, his abilities in the ring remain unequaled. From tight-rope walking to the heart-punch and then the tombstone, the Undertaker has seen it all and has feuded with the best in the sport. He had less than six months in the business before he was wearing a claim to the World Title. In addition to his achievements, the ‘Taker is one of the most respected wrestlers on the trail. As a WWF Leader, he sets the standard behind the scenes and in front of the glaring lights. Originally from Dallas, he stands 6’9’’ and weighs over 300 pounds. The Undertaker made his professional wrestling debut in 1989 and it has been non-stop every since. He began in the Continental Wrestling Association and wrestled between Memphis and Dallas. He used the name “Master of Pain.” At the Earl Bell Community Center in Jonesboro, he beat Jerry Lawler by disqualification and captured the Unified World Heavyweight Title. The date was March 25, 1989. He had been hit with a fireball. Master of Pain lost the belt in Memphis back to Lawler on April 24th. Soon afterwards, he changed his name to the “Punisher.” United States Wrestling Association Officials awarded the Texas Heavyweight Title to the Punisher after Eric Embry had suffered an eye injury. On October 20, 1989, Kerry Von Erich captured the title in Mesquite, Texas. Before the year was up, Calloway signed with the National Wrestling Alliance out of Atlanta. He wrestled as “Mean” Mark Callous and was a replacement partner for Dan Spivey in the Skyscrapers after Sid Vicious went out with a serious lung injury. Former referee, Teddy Long managed the crew. He joined Spivey at Clash X on February 6, 1990 in Corpus Christi. The “New” Skyscrapers wrestled the Road Warriors. They were disqualified. Long’s tag team hadn’t seen the worst of things just yet. Before long, Callous was the only man remaining. On February 25th in Greensboro, he was forced to team with a mysterious masked partner, who replaced the injured Spivey. The match was a Chicago Street Fight against the Warriors. Being out-dueled, Callous and his partner lost. He began to work on his own. Callous took Ox Baker as his manager and learned the devastating heart-punch. Callous took the NWA by storm, leveling his opponents a few at a time. He dominated television tapings and caught the eye of many spectators. During Capital Combat, “Return of Robocop” on May 19th in Washington DC, Callous beat Johnny Ace by pinfall. He wrestled and beat Brian Pillman at Clash XI on June 13th in Charleston. Callous skyrocketed up the ranks and soon became the number one contender to the United States Title, held by Lex Luger. On July 7th in Baltimore, he received a shot at the U.S. Title during the Great American Bash event. After a fine showing, Callous was pinned. He left the NWA and signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation. Calloway made his wrestling debut in the WWF world as a product of Brother Love in Hartford, Connecticut on November 22, 1990. His initial appearance came as a hired member of the Million Dollar Team led by Ted DiBiase. The name was Kane the Undertaker. Along with DiBiase, the Undertaker teamed with the Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine. The gimmick was strong and many fans were in awe of the big man. Many were also unaware of his previous experiences in Memphis and the NWA. The Million Dollar Team’s opponents were the Dream Team, led by Dusty Rhodes and manned by Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart and Koko B. Ware. The Undertaker continued to shock witnesses by dominating the early moments of the match. He pinned Ware in less than two-minutes. Later in the match, the Undertaker was able to pin both Neidhart and former NWA World Champion Dusty Rhodes. Three of the four enemies were pinned by the newcomer. He battled Rhodes after he was eliminated and got counted out of the ring. DiBiase pinned Bret Hart in the final, giving their team a win. The Undertaker’s initial impression on the WWF was strong. He lost the services of Brother Love and gained Paul Bearer as his second. The Undertaker went to Miami for the annual Royal Rumble on January 19, 1991. He entered at number 12 and Hulk Hogan ended up winning. The Undertaker gave Jimmy Snuka a tombstone piledriver, his finisher, at WrestleMania VII in Los Angeles in March. Two days later, he appeared at a television taping in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, he attacked former WWF Champion, the Ultimate Warrior and locked him inside of a air-tight casket. For attacking one of the federation’s most popular wrestlers, the ‘Taker became one of the most hated men quick. He began to get matches against the Warrior on house shows throughout the nation. On April 13th in Auburn Hills, the Undertaker continued his relentless beating of the Warrior failing to heed warnings from the official. He was disqualified. Jim Duggan and Davey Boy Smith ran out to stop him. The Undertaker suffered an injury that would keep him out of SummerSlam in August. His career progression slowed a little, but things were going to really heat up before the year was over. The Undertaker was granted a World Title shot at the next pay-per-view, the Survivor Series. The date was November 27, 1991 and he met Hulk Hogan in Detroit. Ric Flair played a small part in the ending, but when it was all said and done, the Undertaker was the WWF World Heavyweight Champion. The top moment in his career. Due to the controversy, officials signed a quick rematch for December 3rd in San Antonio. The Undertaker was pinned and dropped the belt. Problems continued to rise, and finally the WWF Belt was headed for vacancy. The winner of the 1992 Royal Rumble would settle the questions. He participated in the event, but did not win. Ric Flair did. The Undertaker pinned Jake Roberts after a tombstone piledriver on the Hoosier Dome floor on April 5, 1992 in Indianapolis at WrestleMania. He got into a feud with Kim Chee’s Kamala during the summer. The war turned him into a fan favorite. The Undertaker beat him in London on August 29th by disqualification. Kim Chee interfered. The Undertaker won a clear-cut special casket match against Kamala in Richfield, Ohio on November 25th at the pay-per-view. He was one of thirty men in the 1993 Royal Rumble in Sacramento. Again, he was ousted. The event went to another big man, Yokozuna. In Las Vegas on April 4th, he wrestled Giant Gonzales, a seven-foot athlete and won by disqualification. The Undertaker continued his feud with Gonzales. Neither wrestler were booked for the King of the Ring in June. The rematch was scheduled for August 30th in Auburn Hills. He won by pinfall in a special “rest in peace” match. The Undertaker won his second straight feud. Yokozuna was still reigning as the champion after SummerSlam and the Undertaker was seemingly one of the top contenders. He was defeated by Yokozuna on October 28th in Detroit by pinfall after being hit with a salt bucket in a title match. During the Survivor Series, he teamed with Lex Luger and the Steiners in Boston against Jacques Rougeau, Crush, Ludvig Borga and the World Champ, Yokozuna. The Undertaker got into a serious contest with Yokozuna towards the end of the match and both were counted out. That set it in stone. Despite early attempts, the Undertaker had become the number one contender and earned a pay-per-view title match. It occurred on January 22, 1994 in Providence and it was a casket match, his specialty. The Undertaker lost when he was attacked by a number of other wrestlers and tossed into his own casket. A darkened scene was the end of the Undertaker. Later in the evening, Bret Hart and Lex Luger co-won the Royal Rumble. Thus, both men were elected to get title shots at WrestleMania. The Undertaker’s shot had come and gone. He disappeared from action until the summer when promotions for SummerSlam began. And his return was going to make the main event. A “mysterious” Undertaker had arrived on the scene managed by Ted DiBiase. Leslie Nielson, a comedian from Hollywood, made his presence known and tried to investigate the situation. No one was sure if the “real” Undertaker was going to appear. Of course, he did. On August 29th in Chicago, the Undertaker met the Undertaker. Only one was a former WWF Champion. Bearer’s charge pinned DiBiase’s. A huge victory. The Undertaker was back up top the ladder. By August, Bret Hart was the World Champion. Was a Hart- Undertaker match scheduled for the Survivor Series? No. The Undertaker had another feud to end. He met Yokozuna in Montreal on October 21st and beat him in a casket bout. On the 23rd of November in San Antonio, the two battled again in a similar match. The Undertaker won again. He beat Irwin R. Schyster at the Royal Rumble on January 22, 1995. The Undertaker stopped the reign of terror produced by King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania XI in Hartford. During the contest, Kama ran out and took the urn. A bad move. Another feud had begun. The Undertaker was pinned by the eventual winner of the 1995 King of the Ring, Mabel, on June 25th. He met Kama in a casket match on August 27th in Pittsburgh. The Undertaker got the win. He remained out of action with injuries until the Survivor Series where he teamed with Savio Vega, Fatu and Henry Godwinn against Jerry Lawler, Mabel, Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Dr. Isaac Yankem. The Undertaker pinned Lawler, Yankem and Helmsley. The last remaining opponent was counted out. The entire team survived. In Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Undertaker beat Mabel in a return grudge, casket match at In Your House V on December 17th. He was named the number one contender to the WWF Championship the next night during the live edition of Monday Night Raw, by president, Gorilla Monsoon. The Undertaker was set to wrestle Bret Hart for the World Title at the Royal Rumble in January. Diesel joined the fray and became engaged with the Undertaker about who should rightfully own the top challenger spot. He appeared at the end of the show with his casket, ending a match between Yokozuna and Razor Ramon. The Undertaker succeeded in convincing all that he deserved the match and locked up with the title-holder on January 21st in Fresno. He won by disqualification after Diesel interfered. For the lack of a finish, the Undertaker received a rematch against the World Champion on February 5th during Raw. The Undertaker and Hart wrestled for several minutes before Diesel again ran out and stopped the action. He paid Diesel back on February 18th at the In Your House pay-per-view in Louisville. ‘Taker attacked him from under the cage enclosed ring and pulled him underneath, allowing Hart to retain his championship. The two were set for a match at WrestleMania, with neither in line for a World Title shot. That position was going to the winner of the Rumble, Shawn Michaels. The next night on a live Raw, the Undertaker’s casket was destroyed by Diesel, wielding an ax. It was more payback. WrestleMania XII was held on March 31, 1996 in Anaheim, California. He pinned Diesel with a tombstone after more than 16-minutes of wrestling. Their feud ended there. Mankind, formerly known as Cactus Jack, opened up a new war with some words for the Undertaker in April. The two wrestled a dark match at In Your House VII on April 28th in Omaha. The Undertaker beat Mankind by pinfall. To continue things further, Mankind attacked the Undertaker during the May 13th edition of Raw. It began with an interview for the Undertaker with Vince McMahon. Goldust went to the ring and began to talk. The Undertaker didn’t take too much of the verbiage. He attacked the golden wrestler. Mankind ran out and put the Undertaker in his claw hold. When the Undertaker came to, both of the others were gone. He lost to Davey Boy Smith on June 10, 1996 in a match in which he was held by Mankind and counted out. The Undertaker met Steve Austin the day after the 1996 King of the Ring on live television. Goldust interfered, causing Austin’s disqualification and ending the match. Jerry Lawler speculated that Bearer’s actions in Milwaukee were purposeful. The Undertaker and Austin were rematched on July 29th. Mankind ran out and got into a fight outside the ring with the Undertaker, leaving Austin in the ring alone to get the victory. He had the last laugh with a piledriver on Austin. After years of loyal partnership, the Undertaker and Paul Bearer went their own ways after the SummerSlam show in Cleveland on August 18th. Bearer turned against his ally, assisting in Mankind’s victory during the final moments of their boiler room match. The Undertaker was carried from the ring. He returned to the ring the following night on Raw, but not under his own power. A group of hooded men carried the Undertaker back to the ring, where he seemed to rejuvenate himself. The crowd around him responded as loud as they could. Mankind and Bearer ran for any kind of cover they could find. He wrestled and beat Goldust on September 22nd. The Undertaker met Mankind in a “Buried Alive” match on October 20, 1996. He got another win. During the Survivor Series on November 17th in New York City, the Undertaker again beat Mankind while Bearer was suspended above the ring, preventing him from interfering in the match. Bearer brought the Executioner into the WWF to meet the Undertaker and the December In Your House. It was a special “Armageddon” match. Undertaker beat him too. He seemed unbeatable and his streak was building. He met former WCW World Champion Vader on January 19, 1997 before more than 60,000 fans at the AlamoDome in San Antonio. Vader beat him. The Undertaker entered the Royal Rumble at number 30, but Steve Austin got the win. He was involved in a four-way match for the vacant WWF World Title on February 16th against Austin, Vader and Bret Hart. The Undertaker pinned Vader, but lost to Hart in the finals. Officials scheduled the Undertaker for a World Title match against Sid Vicious in the main event of WrestleMania in Chicago on March 23rd. After 21:19, he pinned the champ and took the WWF World Title. His second reign began. At the two In Your House pay-per-view shows that followed, Mankind and Steve Austin challenged him for the belt. Both were defeated. Before 9,000 fans at the Civic Center in Providence, the Undertaker beat Faarooq to retain his belt on June 8th at the King of the Ring. He won over Vader on July 6th. Before 20,000 fans in East Rutherford on August 3rd, the Undertaker lost the WWF World Title to Bret Hart. Shawn Michaels was the special referee. A rift between the Undertaker and Michaels ignited during the SummerSlam match. Officials immediately signed a match for the next pay-per-view on September 7th. The two wrestled to a no-contest. On October 5th in St. Louis, he battled Michaels again. The second round was a “Hell in the Cell” match. The Undertaker was beaten in a classic bout. There were some odd circumstances in his loss. Kane, the Undertaker’s brother, appeared and attacked him. He broke through the cage and severely damaged the ‘Takers opportunity to take Michaels’ European Title. The event marked the first appearance of Kane, but it certainly wouldn’t be his last. The Undertaker stated that he would never fight his family. He wrestled and lost to Jeff Jarrett by disqualification on December 7th during the DeGeneration X pay-per-view. Kane had gone to the ring and chokeslammed Jarrett and he wasn’t done there. He was hell-bent on getting his brother in the ring with him. In January during the Royal Rumble, the Undertaker wrestled Michaels, who had since captured the WWF World Title, in a special casket match. During the bout, Kane interfered and then helped the champ retain. The Undertaker was locked in the casket and Kane and Bearer proceeded to light the box on fire. An estimated 18,000 fans watched in amazement. With wins over Mankind and Vader, Kane seemed unstoppable. The Undertaker couldn’t enter a match without expecting Kane to appear. He had no other option but to sign the match. On March 29th at WrestleMania, the two were matched. He successfully pinned Kane. The war was not over. In April during Unforgiven, he beat Kane again in a special “Inferno” match, which saw the ring surrounded by flames. Luckily, no one was seriously injured. The bout did see a huge ‘Taker leap from the ring onto Kane and Paul Bearer outside. The Undertaker had a historic match against Mankind on June 28th in Pittsburgh. It was his second “Hell in a Cell” match and saw some classic Mick Foley bumps. In the main event, Kane won the WWF World Title from Steve Austin. He formed a team with Austin against Kane and Mankind on July 26th in Fresno. The two won the WWF World Tag Team Title. On August 10th in Omaha, they lost the belts back to the former champs. He wrestled Austin for the WWF World Title on August 30th at SummerSlam in New York City. Austin retained the belt. A three-way match was scheduled for Break Down in Hamilton, Ontario on September 27, 1998. Austin was going to defend the title against both the Undertaker and Kane. In a wild turn of events, both of the challengers to the title pinned him. The Undertaker had captured his third WWF Title, but he was sharing half of it with Kane. How could two people hold one title? WWF Officials immediately declared the title vacant pending a rematch between the Undertaker and Kane. No reign was established for either man. On Sunday, October 18th in Chicago, the two men wrestled to a no-decision when Austin, who was the special referee, stunned both men. Finally, a tournament was announced for the Survivor Series. On Sunday, November 15, 1998 in St. Louis, the Undertaker wrestled Kane in the second round. Both had received a bye. Paul Bearer helped the ‘Taker win. In the semifinals, he wrestled the Rock but when Kane interfered, the match was called. The Rock was chokeslammed and won by disqualification. Afterwards, the Undertaker brawled with Kane. Rocky went on to win the tournament and the WWF World Title after becoming the “Corporate Champion.” “Stone Cold” Steve Austin beat Kane, Mankind and the Undertaker in a four-way match on December 6th at Capital Carnage. The Undertaker was also defeated in a “Buried Alive” match by Austin on December 13th in Vancouver. He left the organization for several months to recover from injuries. The Undertaker returned prior to WrestleMania XV on March 28, 1999 in Philadelphia. He wrestled and beat the Big Bossman in a cage match. At Backlash on April 25th in Providence, another Corporate member, Ken Shamrock was beaten. Two days later, he teamed with Hunter Hearst Helmsley in New Haven against The Rock and Steve Austin. Neither team was able to get a decision. A no contest was ruled by the official. He wrestled Austin and Triple H in a three-way dance for the WWF Title on May 16th. Austin was able to retain. Later in the month during Over the Edge on May 23rd, the Undertaker beat Steve Austin for the WWF World Title. Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon were the special referees, in opposition to the champ. It was his third official WWF Title victory. He beat the man who ousted him in the tournament the November before, The Rock., on June 27th at the King of the Ring in Greensboro. Over 19,000 fans were in attendance to see the Undertaker win. The next night on USA, Austin beat the Undertaker to regain the title. He lost to Austin again on July 25th at Fully Loaded in Buffalo. It was a first-blood match. The Undertaker formed a tag team with the Big Show to capture the WWF Tag Title from X-Pac and Kane in Minneapolis on August 22, 1999. Eight days later in Boston, he walked out on his partner and the Big Show was defeated by the Rock and Sock Connection, the Rock and Mankind. On September 7th in Albany, New York, the Big Show and the Undertaker regained the belts during a television taping. The Rock and Mankind wrestled The Big Show, Midian and Viscera during a bout held under “Dark Side Rules” on September 20, 1999 in Houston. The Undertaker sat ringside and did commentary during the match. The title changed hands. The Undertaker went out with an injury and spent months away from the ring. During 2000, he made a spectacular return to the ring. His persona was altered. He “rose from the dead” to become a biker with a leather jacket and a Harley. The Undertaker would enter to the music of Kid Rock and the “American Bad Ass.” His popularity had not wavered a bit. If it was possible, he was even more beloved. During the summer of 2000, he joined Kane and the Rock for a six-man tag team match against Vince and Shane McMahon and Triple H. Helmsley’s WWF World Title was on the line. The six-way bout was held on June 25th in Boston during the King of the Ring pay-per- view. The Rock pinned Vince McMahon to capture the World Title. He met Olympic Hero Kurt Angle during the Fully Loaded show in July. The Undertaker won by pinfall. On August 27, 2000 in Raleigh, he wrestled his brother and won when Kane’s mask was removed. A four-way World Title Match was scheduled for the main event of Unforgiven on September 24th. The Undertaker competed against Kane, Chris Benoit and the Rock, the WWF Champion. In the finale, the champ retained. The Undertaker received a World Title shot on November 19th in Tampa against Kurt Angle, who had beaten the Rock for the belt in October. Both Christian and Edge helped Angle retain the championship. In early December, during a pay-per-view in Sheffield, England, the ‘Taker beat Chris Benoit with a three-count. Promoters scheduled a huge six-way “Hell in a Cell” match on December 10th in Birmingham. Among the others challenging for Angle’s belt were Austin, Helmsley, Rikiski and the Rock. After thirty-minutes, Angle pinned the Rock to retain his title. During the December 18th edition of Raw, he teamed with Rocky to capture the WWF World Tag Team Title from Christian and Edge. A day later in Charlotte, the former champs regained the straps during a television taping. In 2001, the Undertaker and his brother Kane began to team on a normal basis. The two big men competed in a three-way tables match against Christian and Edge and the Dudley Boys on February 25, 2001 in Vegas. The Dudleys retained, but the ‘Taker and Kane were not disenchanted. During a Smackdown Taping on April 17th in Nashville, the duo beat Christian and Edge to capture their first WWF World Tag Team Title. In Chicago on April 29th, the tag champions wrestled the Intercontinental Champion Triple H and the WWF World Champion Steve Austin. All of the titles were on the line. In the end, Austin and Helmsley won the tag belts. The ‘Taker challenged Austin for the World Title on May 20th in Sacramento. The contest was a “No Holds Barred” match and saw both Helmsley and Vince McMahon played a part in the finish. Austin pinned him to retain. In March of 2001, WWFE purchased World Championship Wrestling from AOL-Time Warner. Between May and June, an invasion of sorts began. Things for the Undertaker were about to take a turn for the strange. On May 28th during Raw, footage of his wife Sara was shown on television. The tape was shot by a mysterious person who come to be known as a stalker for his actions. Each week, more intense footage was shown and the Undertaker got more and more angry. On June 18th, the person behind everything came to the forefront. While the Undertaker’s music played, a masked man rode to the ring on a motorcycle. The person got in the ring and then took off his mask. It was “Diamond” Dallas Page, a former three-time WCW World Champion. But why, many asked, would Page target the Undertaker and his family of all things? It seemed that he wanted to go after the WWF’s biggest and baddest man. The Undertaker was definitely the one matching those categories. Each had something to gain by beating the other. In East Rutherford on June 24th, during the King of the Ring show, the two wrestled a match. The wild affair ended when Page escaped. The next night during Raw, the Undertaker and Kane lost a WWF Title Match against the Dudleys. Page arrived on the scene with a steel chair as ‘Taker and Sara walked on the rampway. The former WCW Champ grabbed a hold of Sara and ripped some of her hair out. Finally, the Undertaker got some much needed revenge in Tacoma on July 2nd. During a match with Albert, Page ran out and attacked him with a chair before Kane made an appearance. The Undertaker and Sara both got some much needed shots. The two had several more run-ins before the huge “Invasion” pay-per-view on July 22, 2001 in Cleveland. A five-on-five “Inaugural Brawl” was held that night at the Gund Arena. The Undertaker was joined by Kane, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho and the WWF World Champion “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Their opponents were Page, Rhyno, Booker T and the Dudley Boys. In the end, Austin turned on his partners and joined the Alliance. On August 7th in Los Angeles, the Undertaker and Kane became the 6th team in history to have won both the WWF and WCW World Tag Team Championships. They beat Sean O’ Haire and Chuck Palumbo to capture the WCW Tag Title during the Smackdown Taping. That same night, Page and Chris Kanyon captured the WWF World Tag Team Title. A title vs. title match-up was scheduled for August 19th in San Jose. Kane and the Undertaker wrestled Page and Kanyon in a special cage match with the winners capturing the Unified World Tag Title. The ‘Taker pinned Page for the title and the brothers held four belts between them. There was no question, it was one of the most historic events in tag team wrestling history.
