A profile of Stu Hart was printed in the March 1952 edition of NWA Official Wrestling and recounted his youth, and his time wrestling the likes of Jack Taylor, Pat Meehan, Gil Knutson, and Johnny Demchuck at a YMCA when he was still in school. Hart was put through the mill during his first two years, reportedly the "guinea pig for their experiments," and it can be assumed that this same kind of 'breaking a guy into the mat world' was doled out in the famed Dungeon. The article stated that Hart was an amateur wrestling champion and in May 1940, he won "the light heavyweight championship in Vancouver," and qualified "for a berth on the 1940 Canadian Olympic wrestling team." It was "Toots" Mondt who arranged for Hart to travel to New York and wrestle in 1946, after the latter was discharged from the Canadian Navy. Hart trained Sandor Kovacs. His wife Helen was the daughter of the famous distance runner, Harry J. Smith. Research by Tim Hornbaker |
