Lita is a former World Champion and was the backbone of “Team Extreme.” She was once an athlete and manager in ECW, known as Miss Congeniality and Angelica. Lita was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and made her way through the Carolinas and Mexico before landing in Philadelphia. Her impact in ECW was enough to raise eyebrows nationally. The WWF signed her to a contract and brought her in initially as a second for the high-flying Esse Rios. In 2000, Rios won the Light Heavyweight Championship. Later in the year, Lita joined the Hardy Boys, engaging in a gimmicked relationship with Matt Hardy. The trio had gone back to time spent in the Mid-Atlantic region and were already fluent as a three-way team. The Hardys were skyrocketing upward as Lita’s career was doing the same. Her own popularity was finding it’s own way, separate from the success of the brother tandem. On August 21, 2000, Lita beat Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley and captured the coveted WWF Women’s World Title in Lafayette, Louisiana. The Rock served as the special guest referee as a national audience watched on cable. At a Smackdown Taping on October 31st, Lita lost the belt to Ivory during a four-way title match. Ivory of the Right To Censor captured the title in Rochester. In 2001, the Hardys entered main event status with a high-profile feud with Steve Austin and Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Later in the year, while the WWF vs. Alliance feud was going strong, the Hardys began to crumble. Lita, of course, was right in the middle. She was the only constant in the war, and fans remained totally loyal. Others questioned the motives of both Jeff and Matt Hardy, wondering just which one was going to become a heel. At Vengeance on December 9, 2001 in San Diego, the brothers matched up against each other. Lita was the special referee. In the end, Lita counted Jeff’s pin of Matt. The Hardys remained estranged after the pay-per-view, but were united after the Undertaker used Jeff Hardy and Lita as stepping stones to becoming the top “bad guy” in the promotion. Matt Hardy fought the ‘Taker in a grudge match and also was defeated. Some controversy broke out between December and January 2002 and the internet had a lot to do with it. Rumors were circulating like wildfire and many were concerned that the Hardys and Lita were going to miss ring time. The trio appeared in Atlanta on January 20, 2002 for the Royal Rumble. Lita was instrumental in distracting the Undertaker and allowing Maven’s shocking dropkick. The Undertaker was eliminated, which was a tremendous upset. Around this same time, the official webmaster for the Amy Dumas website announced that they were closing the site’s doors. Lita has become one of wrestling’s most inspiring personalities. She will obviously continue to strike a cord with fans worldwide as years pass. Watch her perform some high-flying acrobatics and realize that she will be a wrestling figurehead well into the future.
