A wrestling veteran.  Konnan has remained one of the most popular athletes on the U.S.
wrestling scene.  Originally from Cuba, he grew up in South Florida and went to several high
schools including Coral Gables High before graduating from Southwest High School in the
early 1980s.  In 1983, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he amateur boxed.  After his discharge
in ’87, Konnan went to Mexico where he began to train for his professional wrestling debut.
Among those to train him in the Mexican Style was the legendary Rey Misterio Sr.  In January
1988, he donned a mask as El Centurion and made his debut.  His size and skill made him an
immediate player.  He changed his name to “Konnan el Barbaro” or Konnan.

In December 1990, Konnan and Misterio went to St. Louis to participate in the Pat O’Connor
Memorial Tournament.  The event was sponsored by the National Wrestling Alliance and
gave American fans their first viewing of the youthful talent.  During the early part of the
decade, Konnan ventured into the World Wrestling Federation as “Max Moon.” In the years
that followed, Konnan won both the CMLL and AAA World Heavyweight Titles in Mexico.  In
1994, he formed the Los Gringos Locos with the Love Machine, Louie Spicolli and Eddy
Guerrero, one of the men who helped train him.  After Art Barr died, the group broke up.

Konnan and Guerrero eventually went to Extreme Championship Wrestling before signing
with WCW.  Upon arrival in Atlanta, Konnan made an impact.  In January 1996, he beat One
Man Gang for the coveted WCW United States Heavyweight Title.  He held the title for seven
months and was unhended by the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.  When the NWO Wolfpack was
formed in 1997, Konnan was an original member with Kevin Nash and Sting.  His entrances to
the ring were always a spectacle and fans reacted everytime Konnan picked up the
microphone.  It didn’t matter what city they were in, he always received a huge pop.  Konnan
was instrumenal in forming the Filthy Animals with Rey Misterio Jr. and Billy Kidman.  He went
on to hold both the WCW World TV and World Tag Team Titles.

Konnan had always been a vocal figure on current events and after WCW was sold to the
WWF, he had much to say about the politics of the sport and his former promotion.

Through his career, Konnan had played major roles in Los Gringos Locos, the NWO
Wolfpack and the Filthy Animals, three of the top wrestling groups in history.  His singles
career garnered World Championships in Mexico and the United States.
