John W. McMahon was from Rutland, Vermont.



In November 1873 at New York City, John McMahon beat Albert Ellis of London and won a
"championship." The show took place at Harry Hill's Coliseum.  McMahon had a big weight
advantage, weighing 192 to Ellis' 138.  Homer Lane was the referee.  McMahon won the
controversial first fall, then lost the second by an accidental foul.  In the third, McMahon beat
Ellis.
