A former WLW World and NWA World Tag Team Champion. A product of the Central States, Reed stood 6’2’’ and weighed in around 265. He made his debut in 1978 and wrestled under his real name, Bruce Reed. Reed was originally trained by Pat O’Connor and Bob Geigel, two of wrestling’s top stars, after playing linebacker for Central Missouri State. “Hacksaw” Reed gained national fame upon his entering the Mid-South Region. He won a two-ring battle royal on December 27, 1984 in Houston, Texas to secure $25,000. Reed defeated Dutch Mantel in Shreveport, Louisiana on July 22, 1985 to capture the Mid-South Television Title. On October 14, 1985, Reed defeated his former friend, Dick Murdoch to capture the Mid- South North American Heavyweight Title in New Orleans. At that point, he held both the North American and the TV Titles. He lost the North American Title to Dick Slater and the latter’s valet, Dark Journey, on January 1, 1986 in Tulsa. Under Slick’s guidance, Reed turned up in the World Wrestling Federation in late 1986. He dyed his hair blond and appeared to have an attitude adjustment. He participated in the vacant WWF World Title Tournament in 1988. Reed left the organization later in the year for the National Wrestling Alliance. He lost to Sting by pinfall on February 20, 1989 in the Chi-Town Rumble in Chicago’s UIC Pavilion. Reed later turned out to be one-half of Robin Green’s gift to the NWA. The other half of the masked Doom was Ron Simmons. They were unmasked in early ’90, but rather than bailing out, they continued forward under manager Teddy Long. In May 1990, Doom upset the Steiner Brothers for the World Tag Team Championship. Teams like the Rock and Roll Express, the Midnight Express and the Freebirds were all gunning for the belts, and Doom remained champions longer than originally expected. They dominated competition. Reed was representing Doom and Long on November 20, 1990 in Jacksonville, Florida when he took on Ric Flair of the Horsemen. There was a lot on the line. For Long was Flair’s yacht and Rolls Royce Limousine. For the Horsemen was a title shot and Long being a driver for the Horsemen…in full regealla. Flair pinned Reed. The Horsemen won their title shot at Starrcade. Arn Anderson had an assist. Doom remained the champs into 1991 and were dethroned by the Fabulous Freebirds, Michael Hayes and Jim Garvin. Reed and Simmons broke up and eventually feuded.
