Research in the Albuquerque Journal 1910 (It is reported that Joe McCray defeated Simon Deschler in Albuquerque.) 1911 1/28/11-Grand Opera House Amarillo, TX Harry Mayes, Waco beat Stanley Lake, Hastings, NE-UTC…referee: Harry Pringle. Notes: Lake’s spinal column was severed during the match and he died two days later. It was revealed that Mayes wan none other than the notorious shooter Charles Olson. Lake was Joe McCray of Longmont, CO. Prindle was Billy Edwards. All three were barnstorming around the southwest meeting local challengers. McCray was on his honeymoon as well, sort of a working vacation. McCray and Olson were apparently unaware of one another’s identities before the contest. This was the second fatality attributed to Olson. In 1903 in Ontario, Osborn Taylor suffered a broken neck during a bout with Olson and died shortly after. 2/3/11-Roy Mabee, 170 lbs., “Oklahoma farmer” is in Albuquerque and ready to meet all comers at catch-as-catch-can wrestling, particularly Simon Deschler. 2/17/11-Elks Opera House “Farmer” Roy Mabee drew “Blacksmith” Simon Deschler. Notes: This was Mabee’s Albuquerque debut. He won a fall at 24 minutes. Deschler disputed the fall and attacked Gertig the timekeeper. Mabee requested that the bout be called a draw, and Deschler agreed. It was later learned that Mabee had suffered a broken rib and that was his motivation for asking for the drawn decision. Deschler offered to meet Mabee “at any time or any place for a side bet of $100, admission to the mat to be free.” Emil Dominek sent a challenge for Mabee to throw him 3x in one hour. If Mabee is unwilling to this arrangement, Dominek will face three men not over 150 pounds and agree to throw each one in a total of 65 minutes. 3/19/11-Dawson, NM Tom M. Jordan, formerly of Albuquerque, issued a challenge to wrestle or box anyone at 190 lbs. He claiamd to have beaten Joe McCray twice and to have wrestled Charles Olson and Kid Cutler. 4/6/11-Elks Opera House Roy Mabee beat Young Olson, 185 lbs., “coming champion from St. Louis”…referee: George Tietzel. Notes: Olson agreed to throw Mabee twice in one hour. He won an initial fall but was then thrown himself. Olson challenged for a rematch “anytime within the next two weeks…best two out of three falls winner take all”. Olson further agreed to make 180 pounds ringside and to put up a purse. Olson is said to have wrestled Frank Gotch. 4/6/11-Pueblo, CO Stanislaus Zbyszko beat William Demetral. 4/8/11-Dawson Opera House Dawson Tom Jordan FTT Emil Dominek, “welterweight champion of New Mexico” …no falls…referee: W. Smock. Notes: Jordan had agreed to take three falls in one hour. Dominek wants a match with Roy Mabee. 4/12/11-Emil Dominek, Dawson sent a challenge to Roy Mabee to meet him at “catch wrestling” in a handicap contest in which Mabee must throw him 3 times in 60 minutes with winner take all stipulations. 4/14/11-Elks Opera House Roy Mabee beat Young Olson-2nd and 3rd falls…referee: George Tietzel. Notes: Olson won the first fall by submission to a toehold. Mabee forced a submission with a hammerlock for the 2nd, and pinned him for the final fall with a hammerlock and ½ Nelson. 5/11/11-Roy Mabee aggress to wrestle Emil Dominek and posted $100 with the Albuquerque Journal…Dominek has already sent in his forfeit…Mabee will attempt to throw Dominek 3x in one hour…Mabee will train with Young Olson…Olson is announced to be wrestling a 195-lb. unknown. 5/15/11-Emil Dominek arrived in Albuquerque…he has an injured leg but agrees to go through with the bout against Roy Mabee if leg holds are barred. 5/17/11-Elks Opera House Simon Deschler, “giant blacksmith” beat Roy Mabee…Prof. D.F. McDonald beat Young Olson…Hatley Twins, 65 pounders-Floyd beat Lloyd. Notes: Both the Deschler/Mabee and McDonald/Olson matches were for $200 side bets. Deschler was billed as making his farewell appearance on the mat. His backers reportedly cleaned up in wagers. Mabee won the first fall. Deschler actually won four falls, as two of them were ruled fouls. McDonald is said to be a Canadian whose real name is McLeod. He’s billed as the half-brother of Dan McLeod. “Best wrestling program ever pulled off in Albuquerque.” 5/20/11-Elks Opera House Roy Mabee beat Emil Dominek-handicap match…referee: Simon Deschler. Notes: Dominek tried to postpone the match due to his knee injury, but Mabee’s backers insisted he wrestle or else lose his forfeit. Mabee had to gain three falls in one hour and agree not to attack the bad knee. A handkerchief was tied around Dominek’s injured knee to remind his opponent to leave it alone. Mabee was seconded by Prof. McDonald; Dominek by George Tietzel. There was heavy betting on the contest. 5/22/11-Roy Mabee returned to his Jester, OK farm. He thanked the Albuquerque fans for their support. He may return in the fall. 6/2/11-Roy Mabee is willing to wrestle Prof. McDonald for a $500 side bet and may also travel to Dallas to meet “a Turk” (probably Yussiff Hussane, who was based there about this time.) 6/7/11-Armory Prof. McDonald’s Albuquerque Athletic Club card…E.G. Notes: Morris was recognized as Chief Arthur C. Montour, the Indian wrestler. He threw Deschler three times in one hour as agreed. The match was held for a $100 a side, winner take all. 12/19/11-Chris Person sent a challenge to the Albuquerque Journal from Duluth. He is heading to Arizona and is available to wrestle in Albuquerque. He will face any 176 lb. man in a two out of three falls contest or anyone 175 lbs. or less in a handicap, throwing them twice in one hour. 1925 4/18/25-Armory Santa Fe Sailor Jack Woods drew Bob Smith, “local grappler”. 5/8/25-Santa Fe Sailor Jack Woods beat Mike Romano. 7/4/25-Bisbee Matty Matsuda beat Jack Bennett. Notes: Fisher’s debut card introducing the “rough and tumble” New York Athletic Commission rules (which “bar nothing in the ring but brass knuckles and axes”)…Fisher is said to be the undefeated lightweight wrestling champion of the world, having beaten Johnny Billiter in 1917 for the title. Aguayo is originally from Sonora, Mexico but learned to wrestle in El Paso from the late Matty Matsuda. Over a long career he also used the names Cactus Pete Brown, Cactus Pete Aguayo and Mexican Pete Brown. The Henley/Duran fight is said to be a grudge match. Mitchell further claimed that when he refused to go through with the “fix” the match was not booked. Promoter Jack Fisher denied the charges and claimed that he had not booked a Mitchell/Aguayo bout because of the former’s poor showing in the Sampson match. Mitchell was accompanied to the hearing by El Paso promoter John McIntosh and wrestlers Gus Kallio and Cal Farley. Fisher claimed that Mitchell had been drunk and threatened him physically. He challenged to arrange a private contest between Mitchell and either Young Sampson or Francisco Aguayo and award him $250 if he won. Supposedly Mitchell’s charges had been made to local police officers. Fisher was exonerated, especially when Mitchell dropped his supposed allegations.
