On March 17, 1937, a report by Missouri State Athletic Commission Chairman Garrett L. Smalley stated that the commission was going to officially recognize Everette Marshall as the World Heavyweight Champion after his victory over Lee Wykoff in Kansas City the Monday before. The championship belt was going to be presented to Marshall "tomorrow" in the latter's hospital room.
