The Wrestlers and Managers' Association of America, in early February 1949, was initiating
an effort to narrow the heavyweight field to a single world heavyweight champion.  Headed
by "Toots" Mondt and Ed "Strangler" Lewis out of New York, the WMAA wanted to weed
through the current bunch of championship claimants to find the true titleholder.  Current
champions, according to the WMAA, included Lou Thesz, Frank Sexton, Yvon Robert, Orville
Brown, and Primo Carnera.
