
Clash of the Champions I -The first of a long series of NWA and later WCW cards held live on the cable station Superstation TBS. Clash I was held on Sunday, March 27, 1988 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina in direct opposition to the WWF’s WrestleMania IV card. The rating in Atlanta was 11.6 and a 26 share of the market, beating out all three of the major networks. Needless to say, the card was a success. Ratings nationally averaged 5.8 with a 12.6 share of the market. Jim Crocket’s promotions and the NWA were flying high. To some, the “real” wrestling the Clash offered overshadowed anything the WWF could have performed. More wrestling fans people saw the action on TBS than saw Randy Savage win the WWF World Title Tournament. -Commentators: Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone. -Sting vs. Ric Flair, NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Rhodes and Sting won by disqualification after Barry Windham interfered on the Horsemen’s behalf. -The Sheepherders (Butch Miller and Luke Williams) vs. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers), NWA United States Tag Team Champions. Billed as the “Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre.” -Junkyard Dog, Michael Hayes and Sting vs. The Road Warriors (Animal and Hawk) and Genichiro Tenryu, NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Champions. Warriors were also the NWA World Tag Team Champions. No Contest. -Kevin Sullivan locked Hayes, Dog and Sting in their dressing room. Clash of the Champions VI -One of the more famous Clash of the Champions. “Rajin’ Cajin” was held on Sunday, April 2, 1989 in New Orleans, LA at the Superdome, the same day WrestleMania V was being staged by the WWF in Atlantic City. In attendance for the show were Lou Thesz, Buddy Rogers, Pat O’Connor, Gene Kiniski and the Funk Brothers, Terry and Dory Jr. -Commentators: Jim Ross and Terry Funk. -Ric Flair vs. Rick Steamboat, NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Four teams going into the 2nd round of the vacant NWA World Tag Team Title Tournament were on tap to wrestle on the card to finally earn the straps. Sting was also on the card to defend his TV Title. Clash of the Champions X -The tenth installment of the Clash was held on Tuesday, February 6, 1990 in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Coliseum. During the early moments of the event, the Horsemen went to the ring. Arn and Ole Anderson, Sting and Ric Flair. An ultimatum was given to Sting. Not only was he kicked out of the group, but if he didn’t give up his NWA World Title shot against Flair at WrestleWar, he was going to face severe punishment. Sting declined to give up the shot and was slapped by the champ. They proceeded to beat him down. Later, during the cage match, Sting injured his left patella and after a Horsemen attack, Sting was out of commission for what would be months. Clash of the Champions X is known as the “Texas Shootout.” -The Andersons (Ole and Arn Anderson, NWA World Television Champion) and Ric Flair, NWA World Heavyweight Champion vs. Dragon Master, The Great Muta and Buzz Sawyer. Dick the Bruiser had comments about Starrcade and his position as special referee in it’s main event and legendary promoter, Sam Muchnick asked the fans to join him in St. Louis at the Kiel Auditorium. Paul E. Dangerously hosted a Danger Zone segment with Sting and some mysterious magic. Gordon Solie presented the “Wrestling Wrap Up,” the official publication of WCW and gave the WCW Top Ten in singles and in tag teams. -Commentary: Jim Ross and Paul E. Dangerously. -Butch Reed vs. Ric Flair. Flair won by pinfall in 14:13. -If Flair won, the Horsemen would receive a World Tag Title shot against Doom at Starrcade in December and Teddy Long would have to wear a chauffeur’s outfit and be Flair’s driver. If Reed won, Teddy Long would receive Flair’s Rolls Royce Limo and yacht. The Diamond Studd was Scott Hall. Steve Austin, Brian Pillman and Oz, who was portrayed by Kevin Nash, were also participants. WCW was dominating the youth factor in the early 1990s but let most of it slip away.
