Real Name: George Lewis "Tex" Rickard
Rickard was originally from Henrietta, Texas and was known as "Dink."
Rickard passed away on January 6, 1929 in Miami, Florida at the age of 59. On New
Years night, he had his appendix removed after suffering from an acute appendicitis.
Initially, Rickard refused to go to the hospital, thinking he had indigestion. A gangrenous
infection spread prior to the operation, developing into a toxic situation that his doctors
could not overcome, according to his Associated Press obituary on January 7, 1929.
The Associated Press reported in newspapers on May 10, 1929 that an auction of the
late Rickard's belongings was going to be held in New York City on May 15. This
included "mementos of his early career in western gold fields and souvenirs gathered
while head of Madison Square Garden."
Rickard's promotions drew $24,502,275 at the gate.
Days after Rickard passed, his longtime friend Wyatt Earp passed away in Los Angeles.
