*On Friday, January 26, 1934, the New York State Athletic Commission began an attempt
to destroy the wrestling syndicates operating within the confines of the “Empire” state. All
matches would coninue being labeled as “exhibitions,” although the commission would
have the ability to label certain matches as “contests” in special circumstances. The
commission also would also matches to go past the 11:00 curfew hour with permission
from a state athletic commission representative. All matches would remain one-fall in
New York instead of two-of-three-falls. All wrestlers must wear shoes in the ring and that
continued fouling by a wrestler could result in an indefinite suspension. The dropkick
move was banned.

*New York wrestling promoter Jack Pfefer had recently confronted the New York State
Athletic Commission with an abundance of details about the behind-the-scenes workings
of professional wrestling. He explained that matches were chorographed. Pfefer also
said that promoters “made” champions based on who was most popular, although all of
his charges were denied.
