Roy Lorne McClarty was born in Expanse, Saskatchewan on July 31, 1918, the son of Roy Sr., and had at least one sibling, a brother named Lance. He stood 6'1" and reportedly played football for the Deer Lodge Juniors of the Canadian League. On February 9, 1950, he married woman wrestler Shirley Strimple. In 1951, their residence was listed as Crystal Beach, Ontario. McClarty was profiled in the July 1, 1953 issue of the Reno Evening Gazette (Reno, NV). He was said to have been raised in Winnipeg and trained at a local YMCA before being scouted by promoter Alex Turk. McClarty was then trained by Joe Pazandak of Minneapolis. He reportedly served overseas during the war for 18 months. The newspaper claimed he beat Henri DeGlane in Paris before 22,000 fans. The Chicago Daily Tribune, on May 7, 1960, reported that Shirley was to receive $100 a week support for their four children after Roy was said to have deserted her on March 15, 1959 "and is now in Minneapolis." Their children were Debra, Tony, Steven, and Jeffrey. Roy wed again, this time to Geraldine Ann White, and had a fifth child, Roy Lorne McClarty III. Research by Tim Hornbaker |
