The United Press reported on Friday, July 16, 1937 that on Wednesday, Man Mountain Dean was carried out of the Olympic Auditorium with a broken leg, suffered during a match with Sandor Szabo. The article said that he was a former "Brooklyn policeman." Dean had been the largest man in the sport until the "advent several months ago of Jumbo Kennedy." It claimed that he was "perhaps the greatest drawing card in the West. His beard and quaint speech made him a favorite in Hollywood night spots, and he was present at virtually every sporting event - caddying at golf matches, carrying bats at baseball games, or chasing balls at tennis tournaments." The U.P. stated that "in the past two years it is estimated 1,500,000 saw him perform." He'd also been in six films "playing character roles as well as wrestling bits" and that "just yesterday, he was signed for 'Nothing Sacred.'" Research by Tim Hornbaker |
