Chicago, Illinois: March 29, 1910 (The Coliseum) ... Stanislaus Zbyszko b. Yussif Mahmout (2-0) (1:04:51, 25:43) Notes: The winner was going to wrestle Frank Gotch for the World Heavyweight Title. The Chicago Daily News stated that this "will go down in history as one of the greatest mat contests in the annals of wrestling." The Lincoln Evening News on Friday, January 6, 1911 included a report attributed from the Omaha News. Farmer Burns was quoted as saying, "Frank Gotch never gave the championship of the world to Yusiff Mahmout. This statement of Dr. Krone at the Auditorium Tuesday night was a little far-fetched. It is true that Gotch substituted Mahmout for himself in the championship match, but by that he did not imply that he was giving Mahmout the championship of the world." A match between Mahmout and George Hackenschmidt was in the works. In early February 1912, manager Emil Klank told a Lincoln, Nebraska audience that Mahmout could throw Dr. Roller seven times in an hour or beat Roller and George Gion with three falls in that same amount of time. There was a full push of Mahmout while Gotch was said to be retired. Zbyszko's manager Jack Herman claimed in November 1912 that Gotch was the manager of Mahmout and that he was hiding behind the latter to avoid Zbyszko. It was mentioned in the Tuesday, November 19, 1912 edition of the Minneapolis Morning Tribune. Zbyszko would wrestle either man. Research by Tim Hornbaker |
