Nickname: Bullet On Tuesday, April 16, 1935, Joe Gunther beat Gus Kallio in Nashville to capture the World Middleweight wrestling championship. Gunther was a late replacement for McBride, who had suffered an injury. The title switch was not recognized in Tennessee because wrestling was not under the supervision of a state authority, and was not backed by the National Wrestling Association. The July 7, 1935 edition of the Anniston (AL) Star reported that Gunther lost the middleweight title back to Kallio "three weeks ago" in Mobile. He held the title for several weeks. The August 31, 1935 edition of the El Paso Herald-Post stated that Gunther beat Kallio for the middleweight title last December and later lost it back to Kallio. Research by Tim Hornbaker |
