In January 1910, the Jeffries combination was having some troubles after Frank Gotch "ran a sliver into his knee" and required an operation to have it removed. The incident delayed appearances, as well did the weather. Gotch wanted to quit the company on January 28 to spend time at Hot Springs. Farmer Burns was also traveling with the combination. According to the Los Angeles Examiner (12/15/41), California State Boxing Commissioner Everett Sanders paid tribute to Jeffries "as the greatest heavyweight champion the world has ever known." On April 13, 1944, Jeffries celebrated his 69th birthday at a party at his "Jeffries Barn" in Burbank, California. A number of celebrities from stage and screen and boxing dignitaries were on hand.
