An article in the December 4, 1925 edition of the Oklahoman newspaper in Oklahoma
City talked about Jack Sherry, saying that for three years he'd been on the trail of Ed
"Strangler" Lewis and unable to get a title shot.  Sherry "gained no recognition until
establishing himself as a favorite here in Oklahoma City under the very nose of Lewis
and his cohorts, who have been holding forth at Tulsa for two years." Sherry was said to
have gone to Tulsa and demonstrated his skills there in opposition to Lewis, and issued a
challenge that all wrestling fans in the city heard.  "That is why he has been matched with
John Avko (Evko), the strong-arm man of the Lewis clique at Tulsa on December 11," the
Oklahoma reported.

Sherr was also going to wrestle Dan Koloff in Oklahoma City prior to meeting Evko, and
victories over both men were needed to get a match at the "Strangler." Sherry trained at
the Central Fire Station in Oklahoma City with Joe Rogacki and others.
