Johnson won the heavyweight boxing championship from Tommy Burns on December 26,
1908 at Sydney, Australia.

According to this Associated Press obituary, Johnson had a cafe in Chicago in 1911 and
a year later, he was arrested and charged with violating the Mann Act.  For his crime, he
was sentenced to a year and a day at Leavenworth.

On April 16, 1915, Johnson lost the title to Jess Willard in Havana, Cuba.













The Associated Press (6/11/46) reported that Johnson passed away on June 10, 1946 at
St. Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina after a car accident.  The wreck occurred
near Franklinton when Johnson lost control of the automobile along a curve and
smashed into a telephone pole.  Johnson was 68 years of age.  Fred L. Scott, who was
also in the car, survived.  Johnson was going to be buried in Chicago.
