Enclosed was a certificate “showing that he had won the lightweight wrestling championship in the big A.E.F. Athletic Carnival that was held near Paris a few weeks ago. The certificate states that a medel will be awarded to the bearer in recognition of his athletic prowess.” Verle Gregory was a Goodland product and “won the highest honors in the American army as a sharpshooter and marksman.” Goodland, Kansas: Saturday, March 6, 1920 (Grand Opera House) … World Featherweight Champion Vernon Breedlove vs. Dan Star (Dago Kid) … two preliminary matches … (opera house manager: Fred Hodgkinson) Notes: Breedlove was said to be the “undefeated and undisputed champion featherweight wrestler of the world.” Star was called the “Italian lightweight wrestler of Kansas.” He reportedly “wrestled ‘Tommy’ Doctor for five hours and twenty minutes to a draw.” Said to be the first wrestling show in Goodland this year.
