Paris FRANCE: January 28, 1900
(article in February 18th edition of Chicago Tribune) (excerpt) ... "Jack Carkeek has been in
Paris a few weeks engaging in wrestling bouts here and there. He has not been able to
distinguish himself, or even maintain the reputation he has enjoyed as a wrestler for these
many years. He arrived too late to be entered in the (world) championship (tournament), and
has been taking on matches wherever possible and giving exhibitions. Before his arrival he
announced himself as the American champion, ready to meet any wrestler in the world, and
was thus advertised extensively. Perhaps Ernest Roeber may have something to say as to
who is the American champion."
