Notes:  During the first fall, Texas Deputy State Commissioner Bill Hughes “yanked
referee Al Lovelock out of the ring during the first fall and suspended him for thirty days
and inserted Leo Voss as the third man for the remainder of the bout,” according to the
July 16, 1947 Dallas Morning News.  Newson was billed as being from Dallas, while Cobb
was from Detroit.  The newspaper stated that the Newson-Cobb affair was the “first Negro
bout ever held at the Sportatorium;” Piers was billed as the “former Purple Flash.”
