boxing) ... NOTE: Billed as the rubber match for Turner and Shimkus, who has been
working with featured boxer Frankie Lewis of Boston MA while making his home in
Winston-Salem NC ... "After trying almost every hold known to the grappling game,
Shimkus finally slipped a half Nelson and crotch hold on 'Peerless Joe' and with a mighty
heave raised him from the mat and slapped him down again, shoulders squarely pinned
to the floor. The fall came after 54 minutes and 20 seconds of terrific battling." --
Charlotte NC Observer, Feb. 9, 1922 ... After 28:20 of hair pulling and face gouging,
Turner "pulled his new wrist lock which is known as the wagon tongue and wrist, and by
nearly tearing the massive right arm of Shimmy from its socket, forced the big Lithuanian
to give up the ghost or lose his dinner hook. Shimkus came to time for the third fall
favoring the injured right arm. It took the wily Turner but a little more than 12 minutes to
finish the battle with the cradle roll. Shimkus weighed in at 70 pounds and Turner at 165."

As researcher Mark Hewitt discovered, "John Kilonis was booked to meet either Fritz
Hansen or Joe Shimkus … Shimkus was unable to arrive in time and Hanson was
wrestling in Asheville NC so the match was canceled … Cates considered using Al
Rogers of Charlotte NC but decided he wouldn’t  be a 'real match' for the Greek rough-
house wrestler."
